After getting the first draft of the artwork back

After getting the first draft of the artwork back for the "taxi" cassette box, it was clear some design changes were in order. I heeded Steve's advice to bring the wheels up into the body more, adjusted the front and rear underside to make it less boat-like, and also extended out the rear interior of the cab to take up more of the trunk space. I used an image of the checker cab that was in operation in New York from 1956 to 1982 as visual reference for how the box would be laid out, which meant that I had to also elongate and adjust the shape of the roof insert that would be included with the cassette. I opted for a curved join at the rear of the cab, while keeping the intersecting hard join at the front windshield. Getting the seam along the new roof edge to line up right took a bit of out-of-box thinking, as the previous design was symmetrical. What I did was, I cut a rectangle with a pair of scissors and folded the paper along the side window walls of a machine-cut box to get the curvature of the piece right, and after a few adjustments, I had roof pieces lining up with the side window flaps pretty nicely. I sent the new design over to Steve at @aka_designaholic and some time later I received new artwork. It looked much more like the taxi cab that I had used for reference during the redesign. He even went so far as to create an assembly instruction infographic from photos I sent him of the construction of the papercraft taxi, which appears on the flipside of the roof insert. I took the completed design to @stonesofficesupply who had a few test prints done up for me to feed into the cutting machine to ensure the file was going to cut properly, and the cuts came out successfully. I felt really good about the foldable cassette box

I felt really good about the foldable cassette box design for True Taxi In Gentle Rain, and made some modifications to the tuck-in flaps that would contain the tire graphics, cutting away some unnecessary cardboard to allow for the tires to give a more rounded shape while not sacrificing the rigidity I had achieved with the last design. I did a test print on some spare cardstock and constructed the box around an empty Norelco cassette. The project was really starting to come together and look like a taxi cab when fully assembled, so I took the project out of the design phase and into the artwork phase. I reached out to @aka_designaholic and asked if he would be willing to work on the art for the cab, and after a few back and forth emails about how things were to look, he did a rough mock-up of the graphics, with some notes. It seemed as though once artwork was applied, some big issues in the design of the box came to surface; this did not look as much like a cab as I had thought. I had put the passenger area in the center of the box, which gave the rear trunk way too much length. Also, the wheels were tiny and sat way too low on the cab. Once I was done prototyping the cassette o-sleeve

Once I was done prototyping the cassette o-sleeve that turns into the taxi, I took a break for a bit from the project to give myself some time to think about what felt off about it. I came up with a few points about what I didn't like about the design. There were too many perforations in the box to achieve what I was going for. The tires were perforated pop-outs, and so were the side windows on both sides. This left a lot of areas on the constructed piece that were left with unsightly perforation burrs. The design required gluing to be completed. I felt that it was wrong to be relying on adhesives to make this project. When I assembled one to test, it also felt... flimsy. When the Norelco case was in the sleeve, it had rigidity in the main body, but the four tires would not stand up on their own because of the bend at the joint. Back to the drawing board, it seemed. I searched for a while to come up with something else. I dreamed about a few different designs, but then one day I came across a release by @casquiat and @drumetrics on the @tapeofthemonthclub label called DRUMTRON 001 that caught my eye. It was housed in a cardboard box that covered all six sides of the tape, and was completely housing the tape without the use of glue, instead opting for an elegant tab-and-slot design to hold together. This was perfect; I had to know more. I shot an email off to David at TOTMC who put me onto Stumptown Printers out of Portland, OR. I checked their site, and found the "Brad Pack", but sadly they had gone out of business in 2019. So... I eyeballed it based on the images on the website and came up with a modified version of the box. I added a couple things to the original design, like fold-in tabs on the front and back, and a hook to the sealing tab on the bottom to keep it from opening on its own. The first cut started looking more car-like, much sturdier too, plus now I could provide graphics for the front grill and rear bumper. The EP drops on March 7th.
